Instructions Talking Cooking Thermometer APH Catalog No. 1-03992-00 Thermoworks TR8400 Talking Cooking Thermometer The Thermoworks Company of Lindon, Utah, has graciously given APH permission to post the operating instructions for the Talking Cooking Thermometer. These instructions are intended to provide information for users who are blind or visually impaired. We urge you as strongly as possible to read the documentation provided by Thermoworks and that you save the card that serves as backing for the blister pack that serves as housing for the talking thermometer. This card contains useful information about the thermometer as well as the address of Thermoworks. Before you can use your TR8400, you must activate the two AAA batteries that are pre-installed inside the thermometer. Open the battery compartment cover and remove the insulating plastic strip that protects the AAA cells while the thermometer is in transit. To find the battery compartment cover, locate the loop located at the top of the back side of the thermometer case. Move your finger down the slope of the loop to its base. There you will feel a flange. This flange is the edge of the battery compartment cover. Press the edge of the flange in the direction of the thermometer's probe while at the same time lifting upward with the tip of your finger. The battery cover is attached to the body of the thermometer case and will hinge back exposing the compartment. Inside the battery compartment two AAA batteries lie side-by-side facing in opposite directions. Please make a note of the direction of each battery so you will have it when time comes to replace them. With the thermometer lying in a left to right direction with the probe pointing to the left, the battery closest to you has its positive end, the end with the little post, pointing to the right, away from the probe. The battery farther from you is positioned with its positive tip pointing left, toward the probe. Two screws are located on the back side of the thermometer body near its base. Between these screws you will feel a circular opening. Deep within this circle is a button. Pressing this button sets the thermometer to express temperature as Fahrenheit or Celsius. You will need a closed ballpoint pen, braille stylus, or eraser or similar device to access this button. On the front of the thermometer there are three tactile features. At the top there is a smooth rectangular area that runs horizontally. This is the thermometer's visual display panel with large print numbers. Below it is a large ON/TALK button. Pressing this button once causes the thermometer turn on and be ready to measure temperature in one second. The thermometer will beep once when it is turned on. Pressing this button again will cause the thermometer to speak the temperature on the display panel. Below the button is a grill made up of horizontal openings. This is the thermometer's loudspeaker. Operating Instructions for the Thermometer Apply the tip of the probe to the substance or medium to be measured. Wait a few seconds to allow the probe tip to come to the full temperature then press the ON/TALK button to hear the temperature. Press the ON/TALK button again to repeat the spoken temperature. If the temperature is currently changing, the reported reading will change. The display constantly updates once per second to show the current temperature. If the thermometer is not used for a period of ten minutes, it will beep twice and go into standby mode. The batteries should last about 4,000 hours in standby mode. Notes 1. Clean the probe immediately with cleaning wipes after each measurement to avoid cross contamination. 2. Do not expose the plastic body of the thermometer to temperatures lower than 32¡F (O¡C) or higher than 122¡F (5O¡C) otherwise incorrect readings or damage to the thermometer may result. 3. If the thermometer is not in use for a long period of time then remove the batteries from battery compartment to avoid battery leakage. 4. Do not expose the thermometer body to water or moisture.
