(a) Wooden board to a desk slate; 2 vertical rows of 7 holes on front; hinged nickel-plated brass clamp at top; "Perkins Inst. Model 23" stamped on front of clamp; diagonally arranged holes in middle of board for slate storage; (b) nickel plated brass slate, four rows of 34 cells, cells have dimpled cutouts to hold stylus point in proper position; raised bead horizontally on top of slate between the second and third row of cells; steel pin on piano hinge; stamped at hinge on top frame, "Perkins Inst. Model 23"; single tooth on top of slate passes through hole in bottom; bottom plate of slate has six hollows punched under each cell to help form proper dots.
