Board slate; dark heavy metal board has pitted cells, pins, and a top-hinged frame of nickel plated steel; nickel-plated brass guide has rounded wings, notched on one end and has two pegs on back to fit guide holes in frame; two lines of thirty-six cells. "56" and "A.B.P." --front of guide. "56" and "American Braille Press Inc." --front of frame.

The American Braille Press was founded in Paris, France in 1925, an outgrowth of the Permanent Blind War Relief Fund which was formed during WWI. Helen Keller served on its board. The Press changed its name in 1946 to the American Foundation for Overseas Blind and became closely associated with the American Foundation for the Blind. AFOB became Helen Keller International in 1977.
Item is part of a slate collection that belonged to David Ronecker (1918-2001). He was blind since birth, attended the Missouri School for the Blind, worked in Texas as a medical technician for the armed forces, and was an avid collector of slates. He was the uncle of Charles Zinser, who acquired the slate collection after Ronecker's death.
