Bright aluminum board stamped with lines of inverse braille cells, rounded corners; top-hinged frame to secure the paper has column of twelve guide holes on each side; "Association Valentin Haüy Paris" stamped on the front bottom edge of the frame; stamped brass guide, with two lines of 23 cells, has pegs on the back to fit into the guide holes on the sides of the frame.

Design introduced by the Association Valentin Hauy in 1958. AVH was founded in 1889 by Maurice de la Sizeranne (1857-1924) a former student and teacher at the l'Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris, France. Today AVH is a social service agency, media library, technology center, and braille printer serving the blind and visually impaired people of France.
Part of a slate collection that belonged to David Ronecker (1918-2001). He was blind since birth, attended the Missouri School for the Blind, worked in Texas as a medical technician for the armed forces, and was an avid collector of slates. He was the uncle of Charles Zinser, who acquired the slate collection after Ronecker's death.
