Hinged pocket slate; dark gray "white metal" alloy; 8 lines of 21 cells; brass pins in bottom. "Lehrmittel Verlag Blindeninstitut Wien" on front of top plate; outline of a shamrock and "61" on back of top plate; windows in upper frame are rounded rectangles.

Provenance:
The Blindeninstitut Wien or Vienna Institute for the Blind, was founded in 1804 by Johann Wilhelm Klein (1765-1848). Lehrmittel Verlag roughly translates to "Teaching aids publishing house."

Item is part of a slate collection that belonged to David Ronecker (1918-2001). He was blind since birth, attended the Missouri School for the Blind, worked in Texas as a medical technician for the armed forces, and was an avid slate collector. His nephew, Charles Zinser, acquired the collection after Ronecker's death.
