Provenance:
Introduced in 1996 as a slight upgrade from the 5196A, introduced in 1993. The two machines had identical appearance and controls. The 5196 series was only slightly different in appearance from the 5194, introduced in 1981: different colors, slightly different texture pattern, condenser microphone grill removed, different switch colors, no headphone jack, plastic handle rather than aluminum, and a slightly altered speed control scale.
