Scope & Content:
Frank Hayden, director of the Technical Research Division at the American Printing House for the Blind (APH), joined the company in 1980, initially working as a technician in the Talking Book Studio. From 1980-1988, he was director of Quality Assurance for recordings, and, in 1988, transferred to APH's new Technical Research Division as a manufacturing specialist. He became director of that department in 2002. In addition to talking about the various responsibilities that his work has entailed, he recalls specific projects, including an experimental digital recording project in the late 1980s, using analog to digital convertors, and the development of procedures for silk-screen printing, vacuum forming and thermography. He outlines APH's process for new product development from its initial consideration by the Product Advisory Review Committee through final production.
