Black and white photo is mounted on a light-blue card. Photo shows a young man, with a neatly trimmed beard and short hair, sitting in an upholstered chair. His right arm rests on top of a closed book on a small cloth-colored table. He is dressed in a dark jacket, vest, and pants, and at his collar is a wide striped bow tie. Printed across the back of the carte is "J. N. Edy & Co., Photographers, Brantford, Ont." Handwritten in ink at the top is "Henry Ballard, Ont. Inst. for the Blind 1874." Henry Ballard was an advocate and historian for the blind. Cartes de visite were popular during the Civil War era.
