C. Warren Bledsoe taught dramatics and English at the Maryland School for the Blind prior to being drafted at the beginning of World War II. He was stationed at Craig Field near Selma, Alabama before being transferred to Valley Forge Hospital in Pennsylvania in September 1944. While there he worked with Richard Hoover to develop the origins of modern orientation and mobility instruction based on the use of the long cane. He was discharged in 1946.
