John Zinninger, Senior Technician, joined the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) as an electronics technician in 1978, initially working on the electronic set up of three new studios for recording of the World Book Encyclopedia. He describes sound recording equipment and processes used and developed over the years by the company, including the company's use of Ampex, Scully, Studer, TEAC, MCI and Revox tape machines; innovations devised for the company's specialized needs; and the company's eventual conversion from analog to digital recording with its introduction of APH Studio Recorder software. He also talks about the challenges of wiring the APH building, with its many additions, for telephone and computer connections. Asked about social activities at APH, he recounts organizing a "house" band of APH musicians who performed with him at APH events.
