Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment: A National Conversation

The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) and the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) came together to sponsor a full day workshop on CVI at the AFB Leadership Conference in Arlington, Virginia held March 3, 2016.

The conversation was designed to unite a core group of people to work together to build upon prior knowledge, initiate research, and discuss best practice interventions in support of the CVI population.

Presenters shared their work on CVI assessment, research, intervention strategies, need for multi-disciplinary teaming and the development of university coursework for future vision professionals. Attendees shared their concerns and needs regarding this complicated diagnosis. Discussion points arose related to the need for theory-based, ongoing research, educational product development, adaptations for curriculum, and guidance in the area of orientation and mobility. A CVI Division of AER was proposed and will be pursued as a way to continue the national conversation that began at AFBLC.

Presenters: Susan Sullivan (APH), Dr. Chris Clark-Bischke, Dr. Christine Roman-Lantzy, George Abbott (AFB), Dr. Lotfi Merabet, Dr. Amanda Lueck, Mindy Ely, Dr. Mary Morse, Melody Furze, and Michelle Clyne.

Orbit Reader 20: A Low-Cost Breakthrough for Refreshable Braille!

Note: Unit shown is a prototype.

The high cost of refreshable braille devices (mechanical braille generated by computer-driven pins) has remained nearly constant for over 30 years. The Transforming Braille Group LLC agreed to fund development of a new technology proposed by Orbit Research. This technology maximizes simplicity, reliability, and greatly reduces cost.

At the recent CSUN conference in San Diego, the Transforming Braille Group announced a successful conclusion to this project and Orbit Research debuted a prototype of the Orbit Reader 20™, a revolutionary device that will have a price point dramatically lower than similar devices on the market today!

The Orbit Reader 20 is a small, portable device featuring:

  • Refreshable display of 20 braille eight-dot cells
  • SD card slot to access files on an SD card for stand-alone operation
  • USB or Bluetooth™ to connect to computers and portable devices for use with a screen reader

Can You Pass This Quick Tips Test?

Here’s a test question for you:

March comes in like a ________ and goes out like a ________.
A. paramecium, amoeba
B. lion, lamb
C. Quick Tip, Quick Tip

Actually, this is a trick question. You may have been tempted to answer with “B. lion and lamb,” because that’s the common adage. But when you think about it, aren’t APH Quick Tips a more appropriate response? Or is that our bias here at Quick Tips HQ? (Hmmmmm, maybe it’s our bias…) I think we can all agree, though, that this time of year can be compared to lots great things. And Quick Tips are, without a doubt, our most favorite great things. (Again, maybe – just maybe – that’s our bias.)

Before preparing yourself for what most certainly will be some awesome April APH Quick Tips, however, you’ll want to brush up on last month’s brief, informative and APH-centric videos! Check out all those Quick Tips below!

  • Unforgettable APH Star Video Contest – Have you entered our Spring 2016 video contest? DEADLINE APRIL 13, 2016!

Orion TI-30XS Firmware and Learn Mode Update

Great news! The most recent production of Orion TI-30XS calculators has a new firmware version and updated Learn mode recordings that improve functionality. So that all customers who have purchased the Orion TI-30XS have the same improved functionality, we have created a method to update the older units to the newer version. Changes in the new release include:

  1. Changes in recordings for learn mode announcements on many keys to match what is shown on the key.
For example, the previous learn mode announcement for the fraction key was "Fraction;" now, it is "N over D." This allows a user to find the key when it is described by a teacher.
  2. Fix made to lists of numbers that now announces negative numbers. Previously, there was a bug where negative numbers did not show up in some cases.
  3. New Upgrade utility

Before you perform the upgrade, check your version of the calculator by pressing the Access key followed by the Memory Variable key (two rows up from the On key). If the version announced is something other than 1.00.12, we suggest you perform the upgrade.

To get the new update, follow the instructions at the Orion TI-30XS 1.00.12 Update website.

We would also like to invite users of the Orion TI-30XS to join our low-traffic email list, where we answer questions, announce updates, and receive input from you, the user. To subscribe to the email list, send a blank email to: Xs-subscribe@tech.aph.org.

APH on the Road

Focus on Vision Impairment in Norwood, MA Exhibit

Field Services Representative Kerry Isham was an exhibitor at the “Focus” on Vision Impairment & Blindness Conference on March 9, in Norwood, Massachusetts. The purpose of the conference was to offer information to help meet the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities and vision loss. APH’s tables remained very busy throughout the day as a number of the the approximately 400 attendees stopped by to try out products and ask questions. APH products that garnered copious attention were the Draftsman, the Mini-Lite Box and Pegs and Peg Board, the Student Model All-In-One Board, and Rolling into Place.

Blasting Off With Braille

Thirty-nine of Kentucky’s finest students met at the Kentucky School for the Blind and at APH on February 18, 2016, to participate in the sixth Kentucky Regional Braille Challenge. The Braille Challenge, a national program of the Braille Institute of America, celebrates braille literacy and braille readers through a series of competitions in spelling, proofreading, speed and accuracy, reading comprehension and interpreting charts and graphs.

Students competed for prizes donated by APH, HumanWare, National Braille Press, and Seedlings Braille Books. Additional door prizes and gifts were donated by the Greene Law Firm and by Brianna Miles, a student at Louisville’s Presentation Academy.

While the students were competing, parents, teachers, and others volunteers met KY Braille Challenge Alum Danielle Burton to hear about her experiences as a student at Morehead State University. Danielle and her father shared their keys for success and talked about things they wished they had known before Danielle went to college! Marathoner Dave Wilkinson also enlightened the group with suggested adaptive recreational and leisure activities for their students.

Congratulations all the winners of this year’s event, including Shane Lowe, the overall winner of the event, and Jenna Claywell, overall winner in the reading comprehension category. We will be rooting for you to make it to the finals in Los Angeles in June!

On Friday, 127 people learned about general principles of assessment and about the late Dr. Phil Hatlen and his creation, the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). Thanks, Cay and Marty for this opportunity to assess the situation!

Everybody Plays in Minnesota!

It was all fun and games in Roseville, Minnesota when Dr. Lauren Lieberman presented a National Instructional Partnerships (NIP) event for teachers of students with visual impairments and for teachers of adaptive physical education on February 26th.

The event, hosted by Ex Officio Trustee Kristin Oien and the Minnesota Department of Education, brought these groups together to learn about APH products such as Everybody Plays 30-Love, and others, including a sneak peek at the new APH Sports Court product. Thank you Kristin and Lauren for giving everyone the opportunity to play!

APH at AFB Leadership Conference

APH had a strong presence at the AFB Leadership Conference this year in Arlington, VA March 3rd-5th. Among those attending from APH were Craig Meador, president; Tuck Tinsley, APH president emeritus; Dorinda Rife, Vice President of Educational Services and Product Development; Gary Mudd, Vice President of Public Affairs; Nancy Lacewell, Director of Government and Community Affairs; Janie Blome, Director of Field Services; Susan Sullivan, CVI Project Leader; and Kerry Isham, Field Services Representative.

Dr. Tinsley served as a presenter for the session entitled Leaders and Visionaries: Reminiscences, Reflections and Recommendations and Susan Sullivan presented during a day-long session on CVI.

Treasures From the APH Libraries

The APH Barr Library supports research initiatives at APH, while the Migel Library is one of the largest collections of nonmedical information related to blindness in the world. Although the collections do not circulate, arrangements can be made to use the materials on-site. In addition, an ongoing digitization effort means APH will continue to make materials available through the online catalog at http://migel.aph.org.

From the Migel Library: Institut Des Aveugles De Guerre: Une Promenade Dans L’Institut. Boitsfort: Oeuvres De S. M. La Reine, 1919.

Institute of the War Blind: A Walk in the Institute is photographic tour through a facility created for veterans who were blinded during the First World War. Room and board were provided while the veterans took part in vocational rehabilitation. Students were compensated for their work making brooms, weaving baskets, rolling cigarettes, weaving textiles, performing office work, and tuning and playing instruments. In addition to a braille library, an experimental device called an optophone was available to students. The device could translate printed letters into a tone that a user could be trained to recognize. Upon leaving the Institution, members were provided with any supplies that they might need to begin their career, and with financial assistance to get their footing in civilian life. This item has been digitized for the Migel’s Internet Archive page at https://archive.org/details/institutdesaveug0000unse.

From the Barr Library: Twersky, Jacob. Blindness in Literature: Examples of Depictions and Attitudes. New York: American Foundation for the Blind, 1955.

Dr. Twersky gave much consideration to classical, medieval, and modern literature, as a method of gleaning insight into the treatment of visual impairment throughout history. Tracing the evolution of blindness emerging from Western Civilization, textual examples include King Lear, Jane Eyre, and Treasure Island. It is divided into four time periods that correlated with the most significant developments in the conditions for the blind, spanning from before 1784 to after 1941. While the author acknowledges the long held opinion that that blind individuals constitute a class possessing stereotyped characteristics, however, because literature both reflects and shapes society, he took heart in the improved portrayal of blind individuals over the years. This item has been digitized for the Migel’s Internet Archive page at https://archive.org/details/blindnessinliter00jaco.

APH is working with the Internet Archive to digitize portions of the M.C. Migel Library. Search the phrase “full text” to find these items at http://migel.aph.org. The digitized texts are available in a variety of formats, including DAISY, Kindle, EPUB, PDF, etc.

FREE: Book Port Plus Firmware Update 6.02

APH has released the 6.02 version of firmware for Book Port Plus. This free update improves performance, corrects bugs, and provides a foundation for the optional Book Port Plus DAISY Online Delivery update described below. For instructions on how to download and install the update, see http://tech.aph.org/bt_new.htm.

NEW! Book Port Plus DAISY Online Delivery (DOD) Update

Hand holding Book Port Plus, Daisy Online Delivery Update

1-07191-ED — $29.00

This optional DAISY Online Delivery (DOD) update adds DAISY delivery capabilities to APH’s Book Port Plus.

Background: Several DAISY Online services have been available directly from APH for quite some time, including APH’s accessible editions of magazines (Reader’s Digest® and Newsweek®), Bookshare, and Open Library. And now you may also access NLS content directly from a DAISY capable player! APH’s Book Port DT and other DAISY clients can use this service to aggregate titles from these various services.

APH’s provision of the four services listed above consists of a combination of a server, a content provider, and a client. The server is hosted at American Printing House for the Blind. The content provider makes the content available. The DAISY Online services are provided solely by APH. APH ties together the application programming interfaces from the four services into a consistent service.

For more information about the DAISY Online Server, see http://tech.aph.org/bpdt_online.htm

New Optional DAISY Online Delivery Update for Book Port Plus

The new, optional DAISY Online Delivery update ties together the four services listed above. This means you may download content from any of these services directly to your Book Port Plus without having to use a computer. It requires the 6.02 version of the firmware and comes preconfigured with the four services hosted by the APH DOD server. All you need to do to start using the services is to have an account with each service you want and to add your credentials to Book Port Plus.

Normally, APH does not charge for software updates and firmware updates, but licensing fees required for Book Port Plus require a modest charge for DAISY Online Delivery. The Book Port DT update is still free.

To Order DAISY Online Delivery Update

The $29 DAISY Online Delivery Update for Book Port Plus cannot be ordered directly from shop.aph.org. To order, please contact APH Customer Service at 1-800-223-1839 or cs@aph.org. IMPORTANT: You must provide us with your email address and the serial number of your Book Port Plus.

You can locate your Book Port Plus serial number under the battery or it can be spoken to you using the following sequence: Press the Menu button, select System, select Properties, then the Book Port Plus will speak the serial number. To exit this sequence, press the Menu button again.

For more information about the DOD update, see http://tech.aph.org/dod

For more information about the DAISY Online Server, see http://tech.aph.org/bpdt_online.htm

FREE: Book Port DT Firmware Update 1.2

APH recently released version 1.2 of the Book Port DT firmware this week. The main changes include the ability to now download content to internal memory. You will still need a connection to download a title, but once it is on your device, you may read without connectivity.

Four services now come installed: APH’s accessible editions of magazines, Bookshare, Open Library, and NLS DAISY. If you already had these services configured, they will still be available.

For instructions on downloading and installing this free firmware update, see http://tech.aph.org/bpdt_new.htm

NOW FREE-OF-CHARGE: Verbal View Tutorials

APH produced a number of comprehensive software tutorials under the Verbal View name, which have now all been discontinued. Four of these tutorials covered the Microsoft Office® suite of products, and while they focused on Office 2007, the information is for the most part still accurate. There is certainly no other tutorial series available with more comprehensive discussions about using the Office suite with a screen reader.

APH has decided to make these tutorials available online for free! They are available in html, Word, text, and DAISY audio formats. The markup is superb, so they make excellent reference books. See http://tech.aph.org/vv for more information or to download or read the tutorials interactively in a browser.
