Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment: A National Conversation

The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) and the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) came together to sponsor a full day workshop on CVI at the AFB Leadership Conference in Arlington, Virginia held March 3, 2016.

The conversation was designed to unite a core group of people to work together to build upon prior knowledge, initiate research, and discuss best practice interventions in support of the CVI population.

Presenters shared their work on CVI assessment, research, intervention strategies, need for multi-disciplinary teaming and the development of university coursework for future vision professionals. Attendees shared their concerns and needs regarding this complicated diagnosis. Discussion points arose related to the need for theory-based, ongoing research, educational product development, adaptations for curriculum, and guidance in the area of orientation and mobility. A CVI Division of AER was proposed and will be pursued as a way to continue the national conversation that began at AFBLC.

JAWS and MAGic Student Edition Available on Quota Soon!

Freedom Scientific and the American Printing House for the Blind have partnered to make a JAWS® and MAGic® Student Edition available to K-12 students in the U.S. using Federal Quota funds! These game-changing software subscriptions will be sold exclusively by APH and will allow students to install full versions of JAWS and/or MAGic on ANY computer they access (up to three machines). This will allow students to have 24 hour, 365 day-a-year access to their computers at both school and home!

JAWS and MAGic Student Editions will include full versions of JAWS and MAGic, with ongoing access to latest versions and updates. It will include free access to Freedom Scientific phone support, training materials, and webinars. Federal Quota funds can be used in the U.S. to purchase these subscriptions from APH for eligible students in K-12. The cost per year per student for the annual subscription is $300. The student subscription will be available from APH in mid-April!

Orbit Reader 20: A Low-Cost Breakthrough for Refreshable Braille!

The high cost of refreshable braille devices (mechanical braille generated by computer-driven pins) has remained nearly constant for over 30 years. The Transforming Braille Group LLC agreed to fund development of a new technology proposed by Orbit Research. This technology maximizes simplicity, reliability, and greatly reduces cost.

Phillips serves as Director and Principal Investigator of Tools for Life, Georgia’s Assistive Technology (AT) Act Program at Georgia Tech | AMAC. Phillips has dedicated her time and energy to promoting independence of all people, including those with disabilities through advocacy, education, assistive technology and systems change.

Also joining us as a keynote is Kevin Carey, Chair, Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) Group. The multifaceted Carey is a journalist, playwright, poet, broadcaster, and business innovator.

Orion TI-30XS Firmware and Learn Mode Update

Great news! The most recent production of Orion TI-30XS calculators has a new firmware version and updated Learn mode recordings that improve functionality. So that all customers who have purchased the Orion TI-30XS have the same improved functionality, we have created a method to update the older units to the newer version. Changes in the new release include:

1. Changes in recordings for learn mode announcements on many keys to match what is shown on the key.
   For example, the previous learn mode announcement for the fraction key was "Fraction;" now, it is "N over D." This allows a user to find the key when it is described by a teacher.
2. Fix made to lists of numbers that now announces negative numbers. Previously, there was a bug where negative numbers did not show up in some cases.
3. New Upgrade utility

Before you perform the upgrade, check your version of the calculator by pressing the Access key followed by the Memory Variable key (two rows up from the On key). If the version announced is something other than 1.00.12, we suggest you perform the upgrade.

Braille Plus 18 Development Halted

APH has announced that we will discontinue further development of the Braille Plus 18 mobile manager. We will continue BP18 support for current users until 2017. APH remains dedicated to providing equal access to exciting capabilities of mobile platforms for braille users and continues to believe an integrated braille system running modern software is essential. Please watch the APH News and social media for future developments.

Treasures From the APH Libraries

The APH Barr Library supports research initiatives at APH, while the Migel Library is one of the largest collections of nonmedical information related to blindness in the world. Although the collections do not circulate, arrangements can be made to use the materials on-site. In addition, an ongoing digitization effort means APH will continue to make materials available through the online catalog at http://migel.aph.org.

From the Migel Library: Institut Des Aveugles De Guerre: Une Promenade Dans L’Institut. Boitsfort: Oeuvres De S. M. La Reine, 1919.

Institute of the War Blind: A Walk in the Institute is photographic tour through a facility created for veterans who were blinded during the First World War. Room and board were provided while the veterans took part in vocational rehabilitation. Students were compensated for their work making brooms, weaving baskets, rolling cigarettes, weaving textiles, performing office work, and tuning and playing instruments. In addition to a braille library, an experimental device called an optophone was available to students. The device could translate printed letters into a tone that a user could be trained to recognize. Upon leaving the Institution, members were provided with any supplies that they might need to begin their career, and with financial assistance to get their footing in civilian life. From the Barr Library: Twersky, Jacob. Blindness in Literature: Examples of Depictions and Attitudes. New York: American Foundation for the Blind, 1955.

Dr. Twersky gave much consideration to classical, medieval, and modern literature, as a method of gleaning insight into the treatment of visual impairment throughout history. Tracing the evolution of blindness emerging from Western Civilization, textual examples include King Lear, Jane Eyre, and Treasure Island. It is divided into four time periods that correlated with the most significant developments in the conditions for the blind, spanning from before 1784 to after 1941. While the author acknowledges the long held opinion that that blind individuals constitute a class possessing stereotyped characteristics, however, because literature both reflects and shapes society, he took heart in the improved portrayal of blind individuals over the years. Field Testing Opportunities:

Seeking Field Evaluators for Sketch-A-Doodle

The American Printing House for the Blind (APH) is currently seeking field evaluators for the Sketch-A-Doodle which is expected to offer an affordable tool for drawing quick tactile pictures and displays in combination with DRAFTSMAN Drawing Film and a stylus or an ordinary ballpoint pen.

The prototype set of materials includes the following:

• (1) Sketch-A-Doodle board
• (1) Package of 25 sheets of DRAFTSMAN film
• (1) Drawing Stylus
• (1) Product Instructions

Field testing will begin in late April and extend through mid-June 2016. Ideal field test sites will be able to use the SKETCH-A-DOODLE with multiple students (and/or adults) with visual impairments and blindness. The number of prototypes is limited. Field test sites will be chosen based upon location, type of educational setting, number of students per site, and age/grade level of students. Teachers/parents who have not field tested for APH in the past are especially encouraged to participate. All evaluators will be asked to complete and return a Product Evaluation Form and related Student Outcome Data forms by the end of the field test session.

FREE: Book Port Plus Firmware Update 6.02

APH has released the 6.02 version of firmware for Book Port Plus. This free update improves performance, corrects bugs, and provides a foundation for the optional Book Port Plus DAISY Online Delivery update described below. NEW! Book Port Plus DAISY Online Delivery (DOD) Update

This optional DAISY Online Delivery (DOD) update adds DAISY delivery capabilities to APH’s Book Port Plus.

Background: Several DAISY Online services have been available directly from APH for quite some time, including APH’s accessible editions of magazines (Reader’s Digest® and Newsweek®), Bookshare, and Open Library. And now you may also access NLS content directly from a DAISY capable player! APH’s Book Port DT and other DAISY clients can use this service to aggregate titles from these various services.

APH’s provision of the four services listed above consists of a combination of a server, a content provider, and a client. The server is hosted at American Printing House for the Blind. The content provider makes the content available. The DAISY Online services are provided solely by APH. APH ties together the application programming interfaces from the four services into a consistent service.

New Optional DAISY Online Delivery Update for Book Port Plus

The new, optional DAISY Online Delivery update ties together the four services listed above. This means you may download content from any of these services directly to your Book Port Plus without having to use a computer. It requires the 6.02 version of the firmware and comes preconfigured with the four services hosted by the APH DOD server. All you need to do to start using the services is to have an account with each service you want and to add your credentials to Book Port Plus.

Normally, APH does not charge for software updates and firmware updates, but licensing fees required for Book Port Plus require a modest charge for DAISY Online Delivery. The Book Port DT update is still free.

To Order DAISY Online Delivery Update

The $29 DAISY Online Delivery Update for Book Port Plus cannot be ordered directly from shop.aph.org. To order, please contact APH Customer Service at 1-800-223-1839 or cs@aph.org. IMPORTANT: You must provide us with your email address and the serial number of your Book Port Plus.

You can locate your Book Port Plus serial number under the battery or it can be spoken to you using the following sequence: Press the Menu button, select System, select Properties, then the Book Port Plus will speak the serial number. To exit this sequence, press the Menu button again.

FREE: Book Port DT Firmware Update 1.2

APH recently released version 1.2 of the Book Port DT firmware this week. The main changes include the ability to now download content to internal memory. You will still need a connection to download a title, but once it is on your device, you may read without connectivity.

Four services now come installed: APH’s accessible editions of magazines, Bookshare, Open Library, and NLS DAISY. If you already had these services configured, they will still be available.

NOW FREE-OF-CHARGE: Verbal View Tutorials

APH produced a number of comprehensive software tutorials under the Verbal View name, which have now all been discontinued. Four of these tutorials covered the Microsoft Office® suite of products, and while they focused on Office 2007, the information is for the most part still accurate. There is certainly no other tutorial series available with more comprehensive discussions about using the Office suite with a screen reader.

APH has decided to make these tutorials available online for free! They are available in html, Word, text, and DAISY audio formats. The markup is superb, so they make excellent reference books. VIPS@Home is a three-model program developed from a partnership between APH and Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS).

Because visual impairment is a low-incidence disability, a family with a young child who is blind may have never known anyone who is blind or visually impaired.
