Teach Nutrition and Food Safety!
APH now offers the USDA Food Safety icons to support MyPlate.
Everyone enjoys daily activities more when they are healthy and strong. For this reason the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) promotes physical fitness and nutrition through its products and its Physical Education website. In 2013, APH launched a series of MyPlate tactile graphics in the Tactile Graphics Image Library (TGIL) http://archive.aph.org/tgil/, supplying teachers, parents, and students with additional materials to learn more about nutrition. Graphics in the TGIL are formatted so consumers can edit or customize them as needed. MyPlate was created by the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP), an organization of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The graphics available on the MyPlate website http://www.choosemyplate.gov/ are brightly colored and use upper and lowercase letters for labels. The CNPP’s MyPlate graphics are usable by many low vision readers.
After “choosing” what you want to eat, preparing a healthy meal can be a lot of fun. To ensure that you prepare your meal safely, APH now offers the USDA food safety icons on the Physical Education website and well as in the TGIL. The Partnership for Food Safety Education
(http://www.fightbac.org/) offers a Food Safe Families Campaign Toolkit. Check out both these websites for activities and worksheets for the classroom. The APH tactile graphics are available in the TGIL (http://archive.aph.org/tgil/) under Daily Living, Health (main heading), and Nutrition.
APH has adapted the original print icons for low vision readers. Download or copy these adapted icons below.
